The immense salt marshes encircling the upper Bay of Fundy were the magnet that drew the early Acadian settlers to the region.  Once dyked  the salt marshes of the Bay of Fundy became some of the most productive farm fields in the world.  From the 1640’s the Acadians were reclaiming  salt marshes from the sea using a  system of dykes, dams and drainage ditches know collectively as the “aboiteaux”.

Over 3 ½ centuries later, remnants of early Acadian ( and later New England Planter) dykes remain while others lie entombed beneath the larger modern day dykes.

Bike back in time!   Experience Fundy’s dykes and shorelines in the Shepody Marsh & National Wildlife area as guides recount the early Acadian story and reveal the genius of the aboiteaux system that is still in use today.
